Exporting Liquefied Gas to new destinations… Algeria’s priority
Mr. Choeib Boutamine
February 4, 2024
In an article published by Echaab online, Mr. Choeib Boutamine, energy expert and CEO of Ranadrill, highlighted the major role played by Algeria currently in the gas market at both the continental and global level, as it tops the list of countries exporting Liquefied Natural Gas in Africa, and is one of the most important reliable suppliers in the world, and the second most important supplier to the European Union.
Mr. Boutamine “Algeria has become one of the most prominent gas exporters to Europe, as it is considered the second most important exporter of natural gas via pipelines to the European Union in 2023 after Norway”
He attributed the already mentioned fact to several factors, notably the discoveries of natural gas wells in Algeria during the past two years (more than 10 discoveries), geopolitical changes in the world, and Algeria’s strategic location, at a time when Algeria exports about 56 billion cubic meters annually to global markets.
The CEO of Ranadrill, Mr. Boutamine stressed that the most important factor that made Algeria excel continentally was using the pipeline that used to transport about 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Spain to export liquefied gas to European countries “Therefore, Algeria’s priority today is not only Spain or Italy, but also exporting liquefied gas to other countries, such as Turkey, which benefited from 5.5 billion cubic meters of Algerian liquefied gas imports”
In the same context, Mr. Boutamine highlighted that the priority should be centered around investing in liquefied gas, as it is sold at a higher price compared to the supplied-through-pipelines natural gas.
Regarding the 7th GECF summit due to be held at the end of this month, Mr. Boutamine pointed out that the forum is an opportunity to address the issue of low gas prices this year, and to discuss the development of mechanisms that influence the international market in the future.
