Securing safe and reliable supplies of natural gas to Europe

Governments in Europe should implement a long-term strategy for the protection of gas pipelines and the development of security systems.
The hike in LNG importation in Europe due to the sabotage of the Russian pipeline has pressured the private sector in Europe, being the sector in charge of transporting LNG, and retransforming gas from its liquefied state to its natural state, in addition to the expensive cost of vessel construction.
Meanwhile, gasification plants are faced with local opposition as people fear gas accidents.
Algeria’s MedGaz and TransMed pipelines are supplying Europe with natural gas. Algeria is a reliable and geographically close gas supplier to Europe, but the EU has not signed a long-term contract to secure its energy supply from reliable suppliers.
Political changes and challenges have prevented EU countries from uniting to resolve their common energy problem.
Italy has made the most of its strong ties with Algeria by ensuring that the latter becomes its top energy supplier, which should be followed by other European countries.
